Welcome back for our Second annual EDH tournament.  Below are the rules we will be using for the tournament.  These rules were originally posted by Gavin Duggan and the original format can be found here:  http://csclub.uwaterloo.ca/~geduggan/EDH_rules.php  (We like to give credit where credit is due.)

The tournament will consist of a number of rounds TBD, but everyone will play a minimum of two games.  The games will be multiplayer with 3-5 players per table.  Please check out the rules as they have been updated this year.

As stated below each army (deck) has a General.  The Generals are unique and there can be only one of each in the Tournament.  The Generals will be on a first come first serve basis.  We ask that if you plan to participate in this tournament you send a list of Generals, in preference order, to EDH@Carnage.com, with the subject EDH General.  Once we begin getting Generals in, we will post a list on the site.  It will be updated as often as possible.

Please remember that this is a fun game of Magic!

So build your army and march into battle!

Deck Construction Rules

  1. Players must choose a legendary creature as the "General" for their deck.
The following cards may not be used as a General: Rofellos, Braids and Cabal Minion.

  2. The General's mana cost defines the color mana symbols that may appear on cards in the deck.  If a colored mana symbol is not present in the General's mana cost, the deck may not contain any cards using that mana symbol. Lands with a basic land type (basic lands, Shock lands, Dual lands, Shadowmoor CIPT-basics, etc) contain the corresponding mana symbol(s).
Example: If you were play Phelddagrif (Casting cost 1UWG) as your General, your deck may not contain any red or black cards; no card in such a deck may contain red or black mana symbols or hybrid mana symbols ( Talisman of Dominance, Life//Death and Boros Guildmage are not allowed.)

  3. A deck may not generate mana outside its colors. Any card which would generate mana of an illegal color, is prohibited.

  4. An EDH deck must contain exactly 100 cards, including the General.  A new variation we will be using at Carnage this year is the EDH sideboard.  Rather than filling every deck with banal responses, it is preferable to allow some flexibility in the composition of a deck.
    - Players may bring a 10 card sideboard in addition to their 99 cards and 1 General.
    - After generals are announced, players have 3 minutes to make 1-for-1 substitutions to their deck.
    - Any cards not played as part of the deck may be retrieved by "wishes".

  5. With the exception of basic lands, no two cards in the deck may have the same english name. (Highlander style!)

  6. EDH is played with vintage legal cards, with the exception that cards are legal as of their set's prerelease.

  7. The following cards are banned:

Balance
Worldgorger Dragon
Biorhythm
Sway of Stars
Upheaval
Recurring Nightmare
Limited Resources
Gifts Ungiven
Metalworker

Ancestral Recall
Black Lotus
Moxen
Time Walk
Library of Alexandria
Protean Hulk
Lion’s Eye Diamond
Fastbond
Time Vault

Yawgmoth’s Bargain
Panoptic Mirror
Coalition Victory
Crucible of Worlds
Grindstone
Riftsweeper
Karakas
Kokosh, Evening Star
Tinker

  1. Shaharazad is legal for EDH play, even though it is banned in Vintage.

  2. Democratic Points is another new rule we will be using at Carnage this year.  We would like to better approximates normal EDH games and will reward players for some balance of winning and social play.  So we will be using the following formula for awarding points at each table.

    - When the game is over, each player votes for an opponent whose play they enjoyed most.
    - Award two points for being the last player alive, and one point for each vote

Play rules

  1. Generals are announced and removed from the game before shuffling at the start of the game. (In Exile!) Being a General is not a characteristic. It is a property of the card. As such, a creatures General property cannot be copied or overwritten by continuous effects, and does not change with control of the card.
Examples: A Body Double copying a General in a graveyard is not a General. A General which is affected by Cytoshape, or is face down, is still a General.

  2. Players begin the game with 40 life.

  3. If a player suffers 21 points of combat damage from a single General, they lose. This is an additional state based effect, similar to poison counters, but separate and specific to each General. This damage cannot be healed or undone, even if the creature is removed from play temporarily. Damage done by a General under someone else's control is still counted towards the 21 point limit for that General and defender.

  4. While a General is removed from the game, it may be played. As an additional cost to play your General this way, you must pay {2} for each previous time you have played it this way.

  5. If a General would be put into a graveyard from anywhere, its owner may remove it from the game instead. (This is a replacement effect. The creature never goes to the graveyard and will not trigger abilities on going to the graveyard)

  6. The first time a player takes a paris mulligan, they draw 7 cards (instead of the usual 6). The second mulligan is to 6, and so forth.
