The Curiouser and Curiouser Carnage Math Trade

By Tyler on October 14, 2011

The rapidly approaching traditional Carnage math trade has launched on Boardgamegeek.com. Again helmed by Matt Golec, the Curiouser and Curiouser Carnage Math Trade provides an opportunity for Carnage-goers to offer up unwanted games in hopes of getting something they’d prefer in return.

Matt’s introductory post goes into the whys and hows of a math trade, but in short it’s a computer-coordinated arrangement that maximizes the number of exchanges among participants based on their stated desires.

Start hoeing out your libraries to find some trade fodder!

GM Submissions Open for Carnage in Wonderland

By Tyler on May 31, 2011

As we kick things into gear behind the scenes for Carnage 14, we’d like to invite all our hard-working GMs to let loose the ideas that simmered away all winter, just waiting for the right moment.

The right moment, of course, is that the GM sign-up form is back and ready for action. Pour all your glorious, incandescent thoughts and strokes of genius into its samite fields, from where they progress to take form in the crucible of our mighty event database.

If you’re new to the sign-up form, take a look behind the jump for more information about filling it out the maximum happiness of all parties involved.

Rules of the Game

Let’s run through the sections of the form:

GM Contact Information

This is the easy bit. It’s how the relevant field marshal can contact you prior to the convention in case of scheduling conflicts, clarification of what your game might entail and all that.

Event Information

The nitty-gritty about your game: the name of the game or adventure, which category of gaming — board, card, miniature or role-playing — it falls in and a description. The description is key in that it hooks in prospective players with a glimpse into what they can expect from the game: plowing through Imperial stormtroopers, delving the depths of Moria, or optimizing farm production, for instance. Keep it snappy and engaging; this is your one chance to make your pitch to the widest audience possible.

Game system applies if you’re using a particular rule set, mainly in miniatures and role-playing games. The difference between editions of a game — Dungeons & Dragons third edition versus fourth, for instance — can matter significantly to some people, so be clear. The maximum and minimum number of players control the fate of many, as that maximum is the most players your game can handle. Consider carefully.

Scheduling Information

There are two sets of fields here, one for your first choice of a time slot and one for a backup, in case there are no more tables available in the first slot. There are XX official slots in Carnage’s gaming schedule. There’s plenty of time around these slots for open gaming, but these are the time slots in which everything in the convention book fits:

  • Friday afternoon, 1pm to 5pm
  • Friday evening, 7pm to 11pm
  • Saturday morning, 8am to 12pm
  • Saturday afternoon, 1pm to 5pm
  • Saturday evening, 7pm to 11pm
  • Sunday morning, 8am to 12pm
  • Sunday morning, 10am to finish
  • Sunday morning, 1pm to 5pm

The two pulldown menus for day and time slot let you mix and match freely, so be certain you’re choosing a time slot that exists. No one’s showing up for a 7pm game on Sunday.

And finally, have you GMed at Carnage before? It lets the Carnage staff know if you have an established history with the convention or not.

Carnage the 13th Schedule Grid

By Tyler on September 29, 2010

The schedule grid for Carnage the 13th is now free for the downloading. Linked below, you’ll find it in three tasty flavors: PDF, Excel spreadsheet and Open Document spreadsheet. With it, you have a visual guide to pinpointing the intractable conflicts in your weekend at Carnage. Good luck making that decision!

This grid is based on the one Frank Perricone whipped up for Carnage 12 last year, which turned out be a big hit beforehand and onsite. Thanks for blazing the trail there, Frank.

Blood-curdling grids of scheduling horror for Carnage the 13th:

  • Carnage the 13th Schedule Grid [PDF, 82kb]
  • Carnage the 13th Schedule Grid [XLS, 25kb]

Carnage the 13th’s Convention Book is in the Mail and on the Web

By Tyler on September 22, 2010

They were warned the book would be ready. And now it has arrived. Click the image to download the PDF.

Carnage the 13th’s convention book, detailing the where, the when and the how of the games to be played at this year’s convention, is now in the mail. Even as we type, this stapled, folded, laser printed missive of gaming-related delight makes its way through the byzantine layers of the United States Postal Service to all the current members of our mailing list.

In addition, for those of you who are staunch proponents of the electronic document, as well as those souls whose mailing information hasn’t yet found its way into the Carnage database, there is a PDF download of the convention book, free for the taking. And if you can’t wait for it to show up in your physical mailbox, feel free to pull down those electronic bytes.

You can also check out the handy schedule grid, linked below in three flavors, the better with which to plan your gaming weekend. The grid is based on Frank Perricone’s work in creating a grid for last year’s convention, so thanks to him for getting the ball rolling.

At the back of the convention book is your preregistration form, with which you can reserve a seat in those games you absolutely gotta play, as well as an official Carnage the 13th T-shirt, if your sartorial inclinations allow.

Finally, keep an eye on the Tournaments and Web Addendum pages. Details for the former are shaping up and the latter is where late arriving events that didn’t make it into the convention book will appear.

Chilling Carnage the 13th Downloads:

  • Carnage the 13th Convention Book [PDF, 3,308kb]
  • Carnage the 13th Schedule Grid [PDF, 82kb]
  • Carnage the 13th Schedule Grid [XLS, 25kb]

The Realm of Cards: Legend of the Five Rings is Back

By TheGrayMan on June 6, 2010

For those not familiar with L5R (Legend of the Five Rings), it is a CCG based on the clans of a fantasy country of Rokugan. The setting is based on feudal Japan and a smattering of other east Asian cultures.

Players pit their clan samurai, ninjas, shugenja and courtiers against the forces of the other clans. All the clans are looking for honor, power and glory. Players can choose to play one of the nine different clans or the evil of the Shadowlands.

Crab Clan: The Defenders – They guard the walls of the south and protect Rokugan from the evil of the Shadowlands.

Crane Clan: The Artisans – They are the providers of culture in Rokugan. They practice many types of art, including the way of the duelist sword.

Mantis Clan: The Seafarers – The newest of the Great Clans of Rokugan. They struggle to find their place and to become accepted by the other Great Clans.

Phoenix Clan: The Shugenja – These are the scholars and magic users of the realm. They look to unlock the secrets of the universe itself.

Spider Clan: The Unknown – They are a mystery, an enigma. They strike fast and fade back into the shadows of Rokugan.

Unicorn Clan: The Explorers – Rokugan is a protective land. Outsiders are not allowed in. The Unicorn are the only connection to the lands outside Rokugan.

Lion Clan: The Warriors – They are Rokugan’s army and its law.

Scorpion Clan: The Underhand – They use deceit, lies and blackmail to crush their enemies and rivals. Rokugan needs them to do the dirty work the other Clans won’t.

Dragon Clan: The Mystics – They are the monks and mystics of Rokugan. They study the power of the universe to better understand.

The Shadowlands:  The Evil – These are creatures of nightmare! They are the horde in the night:  the undead, the goblins, the trolls and the oni. Beware their evil.

The L5R card game has been around since 1995 and has cultivated a loyal following. Part of its appeal is the storyline of the game. Players can affect what happens in Rokugan through tournaments. Carnage has presented L5R tournaments in the past, but unfortunately the game went through a lull in the mid 2000s. We are pleased to say that Carnage brought back the L5R Swords tournament last year and that this year we are planning on even more L5R events. Rokugan is returning to Carnage!

If you want to check out more about L5R please check out: http://www.l5r.com.

Also check out both Quarterstaff Games in Burlington, VT, and Triple Play in West Lebanon, NH. They have both organized and casual L5R play.

Stay tuned for more updates on the Carnage L5R events. But plan on bringing your sword and your honor if you plan on making your mark in Rokugan!
